Women's
Ministries aka WHFMS

When Anne first sent me this picture for the Villisca Review Web site, she put on the subject line of the e-mail "My Father's Garden." I didn't know her father was such a gardener so I took it as "My Father" being the God, the Creator. Well, Anne did mean her dad, Gary Harter. Yet, the beauty is reflective of God's creation - this picture brings to mind the words of the hymn "I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses, ..." |

WHFMS Carrying on a tradition began in 1897, WHFMS - the Women's Home and Foreign Mission Society - is the arm of the Advent Christian Denomination through which women promote and support home and foreign missions. There has been a mission board that oversaw the needs and activities of the mission fields but the mission circles in the local churches and the WHFMS organizations on the conference, regional, and national levels for many years were the primary fund raisers. They have been the mission education arm of the church sponsoring all kinds of activities to keep Advent Christian missions in front of Advent Christians. Today, the role of WHFMS has been extended by the department of Women's Ministries. |
Women's Ministries As the role of women in our society changed, so too has the role of the women's circles in the church. In addition to continuing to promote missions, many circles work extensively in the local church and the local communities. They have been diligent in raising awareness of women fulfilling the Great Commission through their daily living as well as their support of home and foreign missions. These circles extend hospitality by taking food into the homes of new mom's, those who are ill and those who are bereaved. They are encouragers to each other in sorting through being a Christian woman in today's world. They are teachers of Biblical principles. They are in the business of the 3 E's. EXPOSING women to the Gospel, EQUIPING them for life and ministry, and then ENGAGING them in ministry. |

| There are two arms of WHFMS aka Women's Ministries. King's Jewels is an organization for elementary age girls and YWA - Young Women's Association - for teen girls. Materials for King's Jewels and YWA are available through our denominational headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. | |||
| King's Jewels is a group that meets most often once a month and is the tool in the Christian Education of the church where young children begin learning about missions. It is the first opportunity for these youngsters to be equipped for ministry and their first opportunities to be in ministry through service activities. | YWA is the organization where young ladies begin to mature as young women. It is an opportunity to address the issues teen girls wrestle with and that often are not addressed in youth groups. They have the opportunity to get a first hand look at some roles of women other than those that are promoted in today's society. It is a place where girls get to be girls. | ||

Some
ask why "women's ministries" but no "men's ministries"?
It is a good question which I will not try to answer here except to say
that in a news report I heard this week, it was reported that women use
an average of 25,000 words a day and men use just 2,500.

| Taking an old idea and making it new again. Recently on the Carol Duvall Show on HGTV, the guest showed making lifesize dolls out of recycled clothing - therefore, keeping the cost down. She made her pattern for the doll by having her grandson lay down on newspapers and traced around him. I remember doing that with my son when he was small only we did it on butcher paper and then he colored it in and we sent it to his grandmother in Florida so she could get an idea of his size, etc. Anyway, it made me think what a fun project this would be to do with the children and young people in our church. It would be a fun way to illustrate that we are all children of God or He's Got the Whole World in His Hands or The Family of God or use in Penny Crusade using the dolls as stand-ins for those on foreign mission fields. If your youth room or Sunday School area needs sprucing up, these characters may be just the ticket. The instructions can be found on the HGTV website - HGTV.com. Search for the project with this information - Life-Sized Recycle Dolls - Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-452. |

A STRONG WOMAN or WOMAN of STRENGTH?
A strong woman works out every day to keep her body
in shape...
but awoman of strength kneels in prayer to keep her soul in shape...
A strong woman isn't afraid of anything...
but a woman of strength shows courage in the midst of her fear...
A strong woman won't let anyone get
the best of her...
but a woman of strength gives the best of herself to everyone...
A strong women makes mistakes and
avoids the same in the future...
a woman of strength realizes life's mistakes can also be God's blessings
and capitalizes on them...
A strong woman walks sure-footedly...
but a woman of strength knows who will catch her when she falls...
A strong woman wears the look of confidence
on her face...
but a woman of strength wears grace...
A strong woman has faith that she
is strong enough for the journey...
but a woman of strength has faith
that it is in the journey that she will become strong...
